One of the upsides of being sick is that I had all yesterday to rest and read. Reading is something that definitely moved down the ladder of priorities in my life, which is a big bummer.I used to eat through books, one a day. My new summer goal is to read a book a week in place of my dinner parties now that I am winding down for a more relaxing summer. (I'm sure we will throw a few summer shindigs in the mix. ;-))
The first book chose was called "Little Bee", by Chris Cleave. It is a book about a young Nigerian Refugee.
I always like to read books that expand my horizons and take me to places in the world, or history, that don't usually have a place in my mind share.
Little Bee did just that (but please don't read this book expecting soul shaking messages.) The book itself was fairly satisfying. The authors ability to describe situations and feelings was meaty, and his use of metaphors for different situations in life were original and fulfilling. A few passages even gave me chills. The plot itself at the end was fairly vague, which doesn't bother me (more for the imagination) but I can see how some readers would be bothered by the ending, or really lack thereof.
This is a good light read for someone who wants to be reminded of what is important in life, how fortunate we are in Western Civilization, and how truly fragile people, and family units are. I give it 3.75 stars, but I am a tough critic.
Any good recs for a next good read?
